Turkish Patent and Trademark Office President Prof. Dr. M. Zeki DURAK participated in the “4. International Istanbul Geographical Indications Summit”
Hosted by Metro Türkiye and held in cooperation with the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) and the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye (TOBB), the "International Istanbul Geographical Indications Summit" took place for the fourth time, with this years theme "Value to Local, Value to the World" on January 17, 2024.
In his speech, TÜRKPATENT President Prof. Dr. M. Zeki DURAK touched upon the importance of geographical indications in local development and explained the export potential of our country.
Stating that the protection and promotion of geographical indications is of great economic and cultural importance, DURAK said, “Our country has rich resources regarding geographical indications with its rich culture, various climate and geographical features, historical heritage and agricultural product diversity. Today, there are 1516 registered geographical indications in our country and the processes of 640 applications are currently ongoing. In the EU, we have 19 registered geographical indications, with the publication of Safranbolu Safranı (Saffron) most recently. And the application process for 45 products is continuing.”
Stating that they are working on the Geographical Indications Governance Model, DURAK said: “As an Office, a quality and competitive application process is among our priorities. We also attach importance to the effective audit process. "In the coming period, we will work seriously to make new regulations regarding the legislation and to bring this process to a better position with our stakeholders," he said.
Within the scope of the summit; Geographical Indication Registration Certificate for Boğaziçi Lüferi (Fish) was presented to Ahmet ÖZER, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, by TÜRKPATENT President Prof. Dr. M. Zeki DURAK.
